It's Here!!!

Super proud that my new album “Canvas” has just been released on streaming platforms!

This album means a lot to me because it is completely original. It comes from the heart. I am nervous but happy to be sharing a more personal part of myself with you all through the stories told in these songs.

Before this past year, I never considered myself much of a songwriter. I wrote music, sure! But I didn’t feel like I had much to say. After touring in Alberta prior to the pandemic and staying in the homes of so many people, coming home to the passing of my grandmother, and then lockdown, all of a sudden, songwriting became a source of “calm in the storm” for me. Like journaling, I wrote everything down as a way to cope with or process the things I had been experiencing.

“Canvas” is a blank slate for me as an artist. My producer Clare Follett and I didn’t want to pigeonhole these songs in the Celtic/Traditional genre that I have been itentified as for so long. Instead, we arranged the songs the way they felt they needed to be. We gave the songs room to evolve and grow and because of this, the sound is quite different than my previous albums, and I could not be more pleased with the final result.

This album is about love, loss, mental health, empowerment, and positivity. There are songs to dance to, sing along to, and cry along to. This “blank canvas” may be the best thing that’s ever happened to me and I am so happy to be able to share it with you all!

In her albums, “Untamed,” "Fierce," and her song book "Resilience," Rosemary Lawton explores traditional Newfoundland and Labrador songs that focus on tales of empowering women. These songs prove that people hundreds of years ago imagined women breaking boundaries, and leaving behind the gender norms of the time. At the time, these songs acted as wishes for the future. Now they are windows to the past yet they are still relevant today. These songs are culturally and historically relevant to Newfoundland and Labrador’s past and need to be shared with this new generation of Newfoundlanders.
