It was an absolutely surreal experience meeting Margaret Bennett face to face for the first time today after being in email correspondence with her for almost 2 years! I first contacted Margaret in 2017 after finding some of her field recordings of the MacArthur family in the Codroy Valley of Newfoundland. I had transcribed some of the fiddle tunes and wanted to put my arrangements of them on my CD “Painted Glass.” In the process of contacting her, I found out that Margaret’s home was at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Through the jigs and the reels, we were able to keep in touch and today, I finally got to meet her in person. Upon meeting her, she took me to the front of the room and introduced me to the nieces of Frank MacArthur who happened to be there and were thrilled to hear that their uncle’s legacy was being passed onto a new generation. I am so proud to be passing on the traditions of music in Newfoundland and this encounter enhanced this sense of pride.
